Frankenstein's Monster and Count Dracula, after taking in a production of "Camelot" during the off season, ponder how to pass the time until it is the witching hour once again. Sung to the tune of "What do the Simple Folk Do?"
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
What do the ghoulish folk do
For fun, when the ghoul season's through?
The pumpkin who is shriv'ling, the candy corn gone hard,
The black cat who is howling outside in the yard?
When they're cast out and laid off
Ghostly howls turned into coughs,
However do they manage to spend the summer days,
Oh, what do ghoulish folk do... for that phase?
COUNT DRACULA
I have been informed by those who know them well
They find relief in quite a clever way
When they're sorely pressed, they try new spells and charms.
These potions seem to brighten up their day
And that's what simple folk do
So they say
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
Make new charms?
COUNT DRACULA
So they say
(They shrug)
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
What else do the ghoulish folk do
To pluck up the heart and get through?
The skeletons and witches
Who wander to and fro
Have ways known to their own folk
That we just don't know.
When all the doldrums begin
What keeps each of them in his skin?
What ancient native custom provides the needed glow?
Oh, what do ghoulish folk do?
Do you know?
COUNT DRACULA
Once, upon the road, I came upon a skull
Singing in a voice three times his size
When I asked him why, he told me he was sad
And singing always made his spirits rise
And that's what ghoulish folk do.
I surmise.
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
They sing?
COUNT DRACULA
I surmise.
BOTH (singing)
Arise, good ghouls, arise, good ghouls
The ghosts are lighting the skies, good ghouls
The winds will howl and the werewolves growl
And bats echolate all the day
Hear banshees call to one and all
And feel a chill while you may
The world is dark, take a walk in the park
And frighten the children away!
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
What else do the ghoulish folk do?
They must have a system or two
They obviously outshine us at turning tears to mirth
And tricks count or monster is minus from birth
What, then, I wonder, do they
To chase all the sweet thoughts away?
They have some tribal sorcery you haven't mentioned yet
Oh, what do simple folk do to forget?
COUNT DRACULA
Often, I am told, they dance a ghoulish dance
And whirl 'till they're completely uncontrolled
Soon the mind is blank and oh, they're in a trance
A violent trance astounding to behold
And that's what ghoulish folk do
So I'm told
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
They dance?
COUNT DRACULA
So I'm told
(they dance)
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
What else do the ghoulish folk do
To help them pass time 'til Halloween's due?
COUNT DRACULA
They sit around and wonder what counts and monsters do
And that's what ghoulish folk do
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER
(spoken)
Oh, no, really?
COUNT DRACULA
I have it on the best authority.
BOTH
(sung)
Yes, that's what ghoulish folk do
