Things That Go Bump in the Night

Under the Bed

by

Penny Tryznka

There’s a terrible green monster
who lives beneath my bed.
I hear his long white teeth click.

He’s waiting to be fed.
I shiver underneath my sheets
and squeeze my eyes up tight.

Maybe if I lie real still
he won’t eat me tonight…
He taps me on the shoulder.

I don’t know what to do.
He looks at me and says, “I’m scared!
Can I get in with you?”

Things That Go Bump in the Night Bracelet is up for auction on eBay RIGHT NOW!  RIGHT HERE!

Why the Bat Flies at Night

Retold from a legend of the Kono people of Sierra Leone, Africa

Long ago, when first the earth was new, it was never dark or old.  All day long, the sun would shine, warming and lighting all the creatures.  All night long, the moon glowed, making twilight almost as light as day.

Then, one day, Bat accepted a mission.  He was to carry a mysterious basket to the moon.  The basket contained darkness, but Bat did not know this.

Bat took off to fly to the moon, with the basket on his back.
But the moon is very far, and the basket grew heavy.  Bat stopped to rest, and, as long as he was resting, he thought he would find himself something to eat.  So he set the basket down and went to find food and a place to rest.

While Bat was away, some other animals approached the basket, which looked abandoned.

"That's a very large basket," said one. "Such a large basket must hold many good things to eat."

"Lets open it and see," said another.

So the animals peeked under the lid of the basket.  Just then, Bat returned.  But he was too late.   Darkness had escaped from the basket.

Ever since that day, Bat rests by day so he is ready to fly at twilight. At night, you can see him rushing about everywhere.

He is trying to catch all the pieces of dark to put back in the basket, so he can take it to the moon. But somehow he is never able to capture every bit of darkness.

What's in Your Witch's Brew?

"Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and howlet's wing,--
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble."

No. Wait.  That doesn't sound very tasty.
The witch on this bottle stopper has mixed up a brew of her own, with the help of her little batty familiar. (And yes, he brought her the flower.)  The witch and bat are made of lampwork glass, set off with Swarovski crystals and sterling silver.  The flower is made of Czech pressed glass, with a Swarovski crystal and sterling silver.

Brew Recipe

Perfect grapes of Cabernet,
Stomped by foot in my chalet
With a dash of Beaujolais
And a splash of Chadonnay.

Served up with a bread with crust
Crisp and warm and quite robust
And a wheel of Brie that must
Give beneath the test thumb's thrust.

That's this witch's wish for you
To last all this season through,
Because, from her point of view,
That's the perfect witch's brew.

A seasonal wine bottle stopper to stop your seasonal wine bottle.

Cost is 49.99, and 5.25 Priority Shipping.

Now in my etsy shop.

There's a Witch Outside My Window

by Kenn Nesbitt

There's a witch outside my window and she will not go away.
There's a gremlin on my doorstep and I think he's there to stay.

There's a troll demanding candy and a mummy wanting sweets.
There's a ghost, a ghoul, a goblin and they're clamoring for treats.

And as if that weren't enough to be considered rather shocking.
A vampire rang my doorbell and the bogeyman is knocking.

My abode is now surrounded by the recently deceased,
They're in search of gum and chocolate on which they plan to feast.

It's the strangest situtation that I think I've ever seen.
How I wish they'd go away and just come back on Halloween.

The witch outside the sindow bracelet is up for auction on eBay this week.

The Hitherto Story of Witchy Poo

by Cornerstoregoddess

Here is the story of poor Witchy Poo
Who lost her black cat and was feeling quite blue.

She mixed up a cauldron of herbies and goo
To make a familiar all shiny and new.

She added some toenail of ox and of of gnu,
Then stirred it all up with a lot of to-do,
She sprinkled in tongue of a ratty old shoe

And out of her cauldron a Pumpkin Head grew.

"Alas!" cried poor Witchy Poo, "This just won't do!"
So she got out her cookbook and started anew,

Stirring in twigs and some ash from her flue
Until she created a ghost named Babboo.

Babboo and Miss Witchy Poo picked up and threw
The cauldron's dark contents (which resembled glue),
Right out the window and in a bat flew

Who told Ghost and Witchy he knew what to do.

He dressed them all up, then he played his kazoo
While Witchy and Company danced in a queue,
And practiced some moves better used in kung-fu
Until Witchy's black cat and and owl joined the crew.

The five of them sat down to sup on some stew
That Witchy had thickened with a creamy roux.

They drank up some wine, a fine vintage brew
So glad to be done with all that bally-hoo.

Plenty of Halloween goodies to be had here and here.
