Last week I wrote part one of a series on casual clothes to wear on campus. The focus of that article was different ways to wear denim. This week, I want to continue the series and show you some great outfit ideas that don’t involve jeans.
I don’t wear dresses and skirts as much as I’d like to. Sometimes they seem like such a hassle, but really they’re just as easy as (if not easier than) putting on a pair of pants! Leggings are another item of clothing I don’t wear enough. Some girls may be self-conscious about wearing leggings, but with a correctly proportioned tunic or dress, they can look great on anyone.
A problem with wearing some of these items is that they can easily end up looking too dressy to wear to class or when hanging out around campus. So it’s important to know how to dress them down. Because of that, I put together six inexpensive and causal outfits that involve skirts, leggings and dresses for under $100.

Here Comes Santa Penguin

Did you ever wonder who brings presents to all the good penguin girls and boys?  It's these two Santa Penguins, who hail from a small coastal village in Argentina.  With their very talented seal helpers, they make toys for the good little penguins of the world.  Then, on Christmas night, they belly-surf around the world delivering tasty fish snacks, soccer balls of ice, and floaties to penguins from Antarctica to Africa.

Duchess of Windsor's Jewelry Sells Big!

Update: Royal jewelry is all the rage these days. Sotheby's got WAY more than the expected $4.5 million for this highly anticipated sale. How does $12.5 million strike you?  And that stunning panther bracelet went for a whopping $7 million all by itself. Meow!


When it comes to the world of purchasing uber-jewelry, there are jewelry auctions ...and there are Jewelry Auctions.

Sotheby's is holding an event in the latter category this fall when the world can bid on 20 pieces from The Duchess of Windsor's haute couture jewelry collection.

The Duchess, formerly American socialite Wallace Simpson, was the woman behind King Edward the VIII abdicating the British throne back in 1936, creating a royal scandal so huge, Fergie's cornucopia of connundrums looks like chump change.

Thankfully for jewelry lovers, the Duke lavished his beloved with beautiful baubles throughout their lives (he abdicated the throne, not the royal bank account) and commissioned some of the world's most talented jewelry designers to do his bidding.

Here is just a sampling of the stash that Sotheby's expects will bring in upwards of $4.5 million.

This Cartier diamond bracelet is expected to garner a $350,000-450,000 pound pay day.


According to Luxist, Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier's High Jewelry Director, created this realistic onyx and diamond panther bracelet designed in 1952. It's considered one of the best of her "three dimensional "great cat jewels.


Jeanne Toussaint also created this flamingo brooch, decorated with rubies, sapphires, emeralds, citrines, and diamonds. It is listed with an estimate of 1,000,000-1,500,000 pounds ($1,520,000- $2,300,000) - and it's my personal favorite, in case you're doing some early Christmas shopping.


To celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, The Duke commissioned this emerald, ruby and diamond brooch by Cartier that incorporated their initials. This piece is expected to realize 100,000-150,000 pounds ($152,000- $230,000).


The full auction, which includes 16 additional gems from the Windsor collection will take place in London on November 30th.

The Conformist Snowflake

No two snowflakes are alike.  That's what we learned in our science books.  And we believed it.  But what if it's not really true?  This is the sad tale of a snowflake who set out in quest of her identical twin.



There once was a snowflake named Mattie
Who lived off in cold Cincinnati.
One day, chilly Mattie went batty
And pondered and then waxed quite chatty.



She set out atop a fur hattie
To find a twin snowflake as flatty
And oddly proportioned at Mattie
Who lived off in cold Cincinnatti.



She checked each snowbank and mudflatty
In quest of her twin snowflake Patty.
She looked 'til the sun shined and thatty
Was what made poor Mattie go splatty.

Do You Need a Fairy Bodmother?

Jack Sh*t is traveling again, taking his daughter Holly to tour colleges (still looking for one that is willing to have tuition paid in yarn). So Jules from Big Girl Bombshell is stepping in to weave her magic. Pay attention!

WoW Jack So many great comments. When it is my $100 I will buy good soil and buy seeds for my vegetable garden this year. Anything left over I would use to buy jars to can so I could have fresh veggies in the winter. Last year was my first vege garden and I posted http://biggirlbombshell.com/index.php/2010/02/bounty-is-yours-to-reap-and-sow/ about how it woke me up to taking care of my body. I can't wait to get started this year. Plus if I win I promise to run two laps around the garden every night. I will post pics of the garden to show what good use the $100 went toward.

I still planted that garden, took pictures of that garden and learned some MAJOR lessons about myself with that garden. AND I ran those laps around my garden. It wasn’t easy but six months later, I am on Week 4 of the C25K. I am eating healthier, working out and my whole family is slowly joining the journey. This journey is for a lifetime and we all need a little magic. We all need a Bodfather to kick us in the butt but we also can use a fairy BODmother to give us a special wave of her magic wand.
